Does anyone here know how to do it? $150.00 estimate cost to run the test from a Rover indy shop. Annnnnnd $75.00 to program the ACE system out of my Disco II ECU. Am now shopping the Rover dealer instead. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Have a Zonda in a wind tunnel for your time.

I can walk you through it if you have access to a smoke machine with EVAP safe smoke

Well you could get a smoke machine from a party store, and pump that in to the EVAP system. We used one to test the intake on my BMW.

I have an indy with said equipment but he could not figure it out. He could not find the evap diag port, he may be used to domestic/japanese imports

Had never heard the term EVAP before. Gave me something interesting to read about tonight. Thanks!

I have a couple "EVAP Purge" codes being thrown and keeping my close friend CEL on, and I live in a very stupid county that requires vehicle inspection to the nth degree. So i cannot get my tags renewed if these codes are throwing CEL on.

From repair prior to putting on new O2 sensor and wiring in a new O2 sensor pigtail for one that had bad and bent pins in the O2 receiver housing:

P0135 - Bank 1 Sensor 1

P0134 - Bank 1 Sensor 1

P0441 - EVAP code - incorrect purge flow

Ahhh - OK. So it's this (and I learned something today!):

Common Problems That Trigger the P0441 Code

Missing fuel cap

Stuck open or closed purge valve

Defective or damaged fuel cap

Distorted, damaged or cracked Fuel Tank Filler Neck

Torn or punctured Evaporative system hose(s)

Defective Fuel Tank Sending Unit gasket or seal

Split or damaged Carbon Canister

Defective Evaporative Vent Valve

Defective or damaged fuel tank

I'm thinking it is most likely some hoses, purge valves, lor the seals. This is a 12 year old rig that sat for 3 years in front of my dad's house.

I remember the Car Guys diagnosing various things wrong with the Evaporative Emmissions System. In the old days, gasoline would evaporate from the tank, and unburned hydrocarbons are no good for, like, breathing. The EES seals the system. I think.

1$ - I have had success diagnosing passat boost leaks with a cheap cigar and some extra hose. you may get lightheaded if you don't have a person to pass it to.

YMMV

20-50$ smoke machine from party store is the next cheap one to try.

You can't get it past inspection if the CEL is on? Or is this a registration tag?

Nashville has some Goof troop rules governing vehicle inspection and registration.

Wow, they must because I've never heard of a car not passing if a warning light was on. My '03 Disco continuously had a rear light out and to get it inspected, I always went to the south side of town and found some shop that didn't care that much. Never had a problem.

Sorry I can't help you with the codes. I had a buddy buy a ODII reader that would reset and CEL lights that I had on. Worked like a charm for the 3 Amigos. Much luck to ya!

Don't bother. Just put a purge valve on it. Trust me. A few years back we were doing so many of these that we eventually had to turn people away because all vendorsran out and were on backorder for the better part of a year. Then we figured out you could put a Hyundai one on for a lot less money and it was better made!

The Hyundai part # is 28910-22040

Takes about two minutes to swap out. Located halfway back above the drivers side valve cover.

I'm going to look into this. Any experience with installing the heated seat switches on a rig that didn't have them installed?

I have heard round the DiscoWeb, et al, that all trim models above the S had the seats installed but not the $100 switches and face plate?

I've done it before, I know the wiring is all there. But I honestly can't remember if I had to swap the seats out or not, I really don't think so. Pretty sure it's as easy as the forums say in this instance.

Thanks brother. I may have some more questions for you. The forums are just about dead. Do you have any insight into programming out or off the ACE system? I removed the pumps, lines, and put onthe non-ACE belt but my ACE warning light is still on.

Ask away.

I've done the ACE delete a few times, but it's been awhile. That being said, pretty sure it can only be done with T4, I don't think any aftermarket scanners have that capability.

$75 to flip a switch??

Hell to the motherfuck NO.

Commerce should be dictated by the customer and not by fixed pricing buy the business.

Sounds cheap to me. The equipment (T4) to "flip the switch" as you put it probably cost the shop $10-20k depending on where and how long ago they bought it. Realistically it will probably take the tech 30-40 minutes, so if they do it any cheaper they're basically giving time away for free.

True, but again I believe that the cost of services and goods should be dictated solely upon what a consumer is willing to pay for it. That being said it looks like my best interests would be better served by buying one of these.

Kinja'd!!!1

In a perfect world sure. But as it is most shops would go out of business because everyone thinks our prices are to high when in reality our prices are dictated by by our suppliers. So we would pay $100 for part X but the customer thinks part X should only cost $25. That just isn't sustainable.

That lynx thing doesn't look like a bad idea, but I don't have any personal experience with it. There was another one that worked pretty well if it's software was up to date, think it was called Rovacom.

I have seen the Rovacoms going for between 600-700 pounds sterling. Plus drop shipment to the US.

I completely understand the sustainability aspect however, when my wife gets quoted at $730 for a MAF, and after turning the screws on them they claimed it cost them $300 for the part. A $300 part that I place a call to Lucky8 for and get a brand new OEM Bosch MAF for $60. There is doing business and then there are slimy scumbag operations. I would pay up to $50 for an Indy with T4 to clear out the ACE system ECU programming. I feel that is extremely reasonable. But I do not buy into these mandatory evaluations for the low price of $125.

One thing to be careful with on the scanners is that they may have varying levels of functionality depending on how much you pay. For example, $500 gets you fill functionality with fault codes and live data, but no coding or programming. $1000 gets you 100% functionality, but on one model. $1500 gets you 100% functionality on all models.

I completely agree when it comes to slimy business practices. There is such as thing as a reasonable markup, and then there is absurd markups. When I worked at the rover shop I think we were charging $2-300 for a D2 MAF diagnosed, installed, and verified fixed. Interestingly, a few years ago the only new MAF's available for classic Range Rovers (the 4AM Bosch units) all cost well over $800. COST, not retail! Luckily they didn't fail very often and we had a bunch of good used ones.

Good luck getting that $50 price. If you do, more power to you. You might be able to find someone with the capability to do it on craigslist (i.e. a tech who owns their own rover capable scanner), rather than via conventional means through a shop. I think if you had a Mercedes and were trying to retrofit HID headlights and needed the car reprogrammed for that it would be reasonable to pay $50 because Mercedes SDS scanner works pretty well most of the time. But T4 is a finicky little bitch that should have died a painful death before they even started using it.
